Homestead/Farmstead Exclusion Deadline Approaching
Rep. Jim Cox (R-Berks) wants to remind residents that the deadline for having their Homestead/Farmstead Exclusion application completed is March 1.
“The Homestead/Farmstead Exclusion offers homeowners the chance to put some of their hard-earned money back where it belongs – in their pockets,” Cox said. “I encourage those who qualify to take advantage of this opportunity before it is too late.”
Those who did not receive property tax relief on their July 2008 tax bill, made a change to their deed during the past year, changed their address within Berks County, or are a new resident to Berks County should fill out an application.
Only the primary residence of a property owner can be considered a homestead, and an individual cannot receive an exclusion for more than one property.  In order to qualify as a farmstead, a property must be at least 10 contiguous acres, be the primary residence of the applicant, and be used for commercial agricultural activity.
Those needing help in obtaining or completing an application should contact their local school district for assistance. Residents may also contact Cox’s office, toll-free, at (866) 538-2938. More information, including a list of school district resources, is also available at
