Cox Appointed to State Budget and Economic Task Force
1/8/2009
Begins serving second term in state House

Rep. Jim Cox (R-Berks) announced today that he has been appointed to the House Republican Budget and Economic Policy Task Force within the caucus’ Policy Committee.

The task force, which is charged with developing sustainable and sound budget practices, responsible budget cuts and initiatives to cut government spending, will have to determine how to tackle the numerous fiscal challenges facing Pennsylvania including an estimated $1.6 billion deficit in the current fiscal year.

“Our Commonwealth faces a devastating economic crisis unlike any that we’ve witnessed in 80 years,” said Cox. “This crisis will have a negative impact on all Pennsylvanians, rich or poor. As a member of the Budget and Economic Policy Task Force, I will join my colleagues in working swiftly to devise a sustainable plan aimed at controlling spending and turning our Commonwealth around.”

Policy Chairman Rep. Stan Saylor (R-York) adds that this Task Force will have a full agenda with many challenges including less borrowing and protection of the state’s Rainy Day Fund.

“There is no doubt that our current situation is serious, but using the state’s Rainy Day Fund without a clear plan to control state spending is only going to make our situation worse,” said Saylor.

Other initiatives of the task force include crafting a plan for future economic growth in Pennsylvania that doesn’t rely on tax increases or unnecessary borrowing.

“The quickest way out of a hole is to stop digging,” Cox added. “Pennsylvanians work hard for every dollar they earn and deserve a responsible state budget that doesn’t spend beyond our means. “Borrowing against our children’s future is not a responsible way to fund our state.”

Cox, who was sworn in Tuesday for a second term in the state House of Representatives, represents the 129th Legislative District which includes all of western Berks County.
