Cox Encourages Science and Technology Students to Apply for State Scholarships
Rep. Jim Cox (R-Berks) is encouraging science and technology students to seek scholarship opportunities through the New Economy Technology Scholarship (NETS) Program.
The program, which is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA), features two scholarships: the SciTech Scholarship and the Technology Scholarship.
Pennsylvania science and technology students pursuing a degree in an approved field can receive up to $1,000 per academic year for tuition with the Technology Scholarship. Part-time students may also be eligible.
SciTech Scholarships in the amount of $3,000 are available to Pennsylvania residents who are enrolled full time in approved science or technology baccalaureate degree programs. Students must be at least a sophomore to qualify and complete an approved internship in the Commonwealth.
The filing deadline for first-time applicants for the 2008-09 academic year is Dec. 31. Students who received an award for the 2007-08 academic year need only complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid, which is sometimes referred to as FAFSA.
The NETS Program is open to all Pennsylvania high school graduates with a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average at the time of application. Grants are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, and applicants must also apply for a Federal Pell Grant and a Pennsylvania State Grant.
Both scholarship programs require recipients to begin employment in a NETS-related discipline in the Commonwealth within one year of their graduation. Graduate students are eligible for deferment. For each year the scholarship is approved, recipients are required to work one year in the Commonwealth. Approved fields of study are designated by the Department of Education and the Pennsylvania State Workforce Investment Board.

To receive an application, a listing of approved programs of study and additional eligibility requirements, call Rep. Cox’s office toll-free at 1 (866) 538-2938, or visit his Web site at .
