PHEAA Reminds Students to Begin Preparing Applications for Financial Aid
12/18/2007
Applications for the FAFSA available Jan. 1

State Rep. Jim Cox (R-Berks) is reminding college-bound students to start preparing their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) now since it should be submitted beginning Jan.1 for the 2008-09 academic year.

The FAFSA must be completed by students applying for a wide variety of financial aid programs, including the Pennsylvania State Grant, Federal Pell Grant, low-cost federally guaranteed student loans and aid funds available from postsecondary schools. All students and parents are encouraged to apply.

“As a vital part of the financial aid process, everyone is encouraged to complete the FAFSA because it is used to determine eligibility for the various forms of financial aid including grants, student employment and low-cost student loans,” Cox said. “By getting a head start on preparing for the FAFSA application, students will get results more quickly and be able to meet some college and university’s early application deadlines.”

The simplest way to complete the FAFSA is online. Students and parents can access the form via RepJimCox.com and clicking the ‘Free Application for Federal Student Aid’ link. The FAFSA form and instructions for completing it are available at that link. Last year, 94 percent of all applicants completed the form electronically. Paper FAFSA forms are still available by specific request by the calling the U.S. Department of Education at 1-800-433-3243.

Beginning in January, PHEAA will also be holding statewide FAFSA Completion Workshops for students and parents. The workshops will provide personalized help with the FAFSA completion and financial aid experts will be on-hand to answer questions about FAFSA.

Cox also encouraged students and parents to be cautious of online scams when completing the FAFSA.

“Unfortunately, there are online sites that appear to be legitimate for completing the FAFSA,” Cox noted. “So we advise students and parents to be cautious of online sites that require them to pay a fee to complete or submit the free application.”
